What happens when it becomes a nightmare? |
Rei’s vision blurred, the same scene playing in millions of different directions in her head she slowly lifted her hand up again to keep up the mini army of shadow puppets that were quickly flooding the room. More rabbits would flood in and chase after the shadowed dragon, quickly following up each of his wind strikes with bonking off the opponent’s leg….slowly inching him farther away with each strike. Birds would swoop in under the ceiling, distracted that would swoop out of the way as Rin’s winds would hit. Rei took a sharp breath in, her muscles tensing up as she let yet another shadowy beast rise from the group. She resisted the urge to dismiss them all. To silence the echoing noises that filled her brain...she could do it afterwards. Right now, they had to grab the robots.
Their teacher flipped his pendulum around, swiping against the rabbits under foot and spinning it quickly to whip them up to catch Rin’s winds before tossing the entire group over to the shadow dogs near the hostages. Rei ceased up, digging her nails into the palm of her hand as she quickly pulled the beasts away then wrapping the rabbits around the hostages. Like little ants, they’d begin to pick each of the robots up and take them out of the room. Grrrrrrr… Attention quickly drew back to the “villain” near the edge of the room, his pendulum swiping through the air as to neutralize the winds. Faster and faster it would spin...and eventually it was clear he wasn’t holding back.
One of her birds swooped down, settling down onto his shoulder and whispering into Rin’s ear. “Sato-san, I got the hostages. How do we neutralize the threat?” Another quick strike of the pendulum would wizz towards him, quickly intercepted by another bird and straight towards the wind dragon again. Rei couldn’t swarm him; only 19 or so puppets left in the room after the shadow dog and rabbits ran to bring the robots to safety. That wasn’t nearly enough to do anything….they had to come back.

Rei quickly grabbed her hat out of the air as the gust of wind threatened to pull it off; the SLAM! of the rusted door bringing her eyes up to the two faint figures in front of them. Her eyes moved between Rin and their teacher again, slowly moving her hands up. ”Oh? Sato-Kun, Shirai-kun, how nice of you to join us.” A small chide grin curved up his face, his eyes lowering ever so slightly as he tossed their classmate to the side. It wasn’t rare that they would be met with this strange persona he’d put on- often playing the villain whenever he could help it during training sessions. The puppet master quickly moved her army of puppets in to charge, forcing them to at least remain at a distance from everyone. Her eyes quietly lowered, the haze of her mind becoming split between the million screens that sat in front of her.
Fight the teacher.
Was that the assignment?
No, her instructions were to “save” a robot. Fighting the teacher had very little to do with the assignment itself. Rei took a sharp breath in, holding her hand against the wall as she dipped behind a wall. “Sato-san…” Her hand sat between the light of the window and the wall in front of her, vague shadows sitting in the corner. “I’ll leave it to you.” Pop! Pop! Pop! Rabbits flung off and out of the wall, birds sprouting into battle from thin air and another shadow hound rising up to stand by the door. Lagomorphs would cover the Draconis Hero, avians flying overhead and ramming themselves straight into the teacher’s face. One dog would stay next to the girl while the other would charge straight in to try and grab one of the robots.
Their teacher cocked his hand to the side, that small sinister smile stuck on his face as he began to deflect some of the weak winged birds out of the air. Whirrrrrrr…. The pendulum in his hand rocked, spinning in the air faster and faster until finally reaching out to strike Rin, taking a sharp turn to stop the shadow dog from moving closer to the hostages. It pulled back, the edge of it giving up a humming sound as it focused on the boy in view. One of the rabbits would hop into view of the first attack, but the second would come far too quick.

Rei cocked her head to the side, popping her knuckles with her other hand before she slowly headed opened up one of the windows and sent the birds on her shoulder out towards the sound. As always, she couldn’t quite decipher the meaning behind his pause or even why there had to be a pause to begin with. But at the very least, it wasn’t as hard as trying to decipher what her mother would mean when she said something. Cryptic and lost...though Rei supposed the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in that case. She slowly extended her fingers, dropping one or two more shadows on the ground and letting a couple of rabbits rise up. The puppet master blinked, slowly heading down the stairwell as the great beast carried the robot out of the simulation area. “Sato-san is much nicer than he acts, huh?”
Despite however it was she came onto this path, there really was no force of good in her life. No one taught her moral compasses- just how such a thing could be abused for the gains of those stronger than her. But she was a good listener and if someone she was working with wanted to do something...well Rei wasn’t about to say anything against it. After all, arguing was a much more stressful affair. Rei flipped over to the different images in her head, scanning the building inside quietly before nodding and continuing to move forward. Through the second building and the continuing rubble, the growing sound of clatter just beyond the door echoing down the stairs as the pair would inch forward.
”You didn’t say anything about this!”
”What are the chances I WASN’T going to do something like this? Use your brain for a minute here.”
They were, by all means done with this assignment. Nothing was truly stopping them from turning around here and just leaving the premises….Rei quietly flicked her wrist, creating a shadow rabbit from between the darkness and sending it into the room to listen in more intently. “Sato-san.” Her voice was hushed and quiet, focused purely on the small gap of a door in front of them. “Should we turn back now or should we help?” At this point, it was almost abundantly clear that this girl lacked any measure of thinking for herself...or maybe it was that she had a feeling that when in a fight against Rin- whether it was verbal or physical, she wouldn’t be able to win.
Regardless, the fate of their fellow classmates truly felt like it was in the palm of their hands.
How fun. LAIKA OF THQ

“I hope so too considering it’s quite possibly the only thing useful I can do with my quirk. Hopefully no annoyances and hiccups will happen along the way.” Despite her own words, it all felt dry...though lacking any sarcasm you’d think would be accompanied by this sort of statement. Rei gave a tip of her cap back over to her temporary partner and lined the pictures up in her head, blinking once or twice in total silence before beginning to walk through the ruined streets. She wasn’t a stranger to this sort of sight. Destruction and rubble lining the roads, the thick small of oil and smoke permeating from every corner. People were never so kind..and for just a moment, she could swear she could smell the distinct scent of iron...but it was most likely just her imagination. Rei pressed her hands together, folding her fingers and letting the shadow puppet drag across the ground.
They would walk through the building in relative silence, only the sound of crackling fire there to fill the void. One by one, as they would pass in the right direction, the birds would flock towards the puppet master, her eyes carefully trained across their sight as they maneuvered around the debris. Rei ran her fingers across the shadow dog’s head, holding her breath as she sent them into the room. Surprisingly, it all seemed uneventful. No surprises from their teacher that had been his usual style of teaching. Rei found it quiet...and efficient for once in these training camps- as the shadow dog began to pull the robot out of the rubble, an explosion erupted from the building across the street, another group crashing through the window as mechanical voices called out from the other side…..
Ha? Rei squinted her eyes, slowly bringing the robot to its feet before turning back towards Rin. “Sato-san. Should we go help them?” Of course their assignment was already complete. “Rescue a robot” was not “go investigate the crashing noise from the opposite building” Rei knew that. But she hated not knowing. And not helping was probably far more worse than that. She had such high standards for her classmates...and far more faith than she should admit. But also the chances that this is a test from their eccentric teacher was also…

Rei cocked her head to the side, raising an eyebrow slightly before looking away. She didn’t trust him. Well who did she trust anyway? The puppet master slowly lifted her hands up to block out the sun, squinting her eyes as she stared through the glass dome that surrounded them. People were a lot less easy to get along with. With a flick of her wrist, shadowy figures began to rise from the ground underneath her, a couple flapping their wings as they escaped before flying up into the sky. “You make a fair point.” There wasn’t any room to trust people in her mind. Like a finite well inside her, the more that is taken away the less there is for the things that actually mattered. People were fickle, and dangerous. Something terrible and cruel. Rei found it ironic for just a moment that their eye color and hair colors were inverses of one another.
Though it wasn’t as though something as simple as that could make him feel any the more interesting to her.
Their teacher parked the bus in front of a ruined cityscape, building crumpling and rubble scattered across the ground. Rei could swear she almost heard a slight humming in the air from the thick smell of smoke that permeated from every corner. She looked at Rin again, glancing at him up and down before sending her army of birds up into the smoke. “How shall we deal with the fire once we head in?” Rei spoke up as her eyes seemed to scan across the ground; the simple view of what her birds were seeing implanted in her mind as she merely just stared down at the fallen buildings underneath them. “I trust that you have a way to deal with the smoke at the very least. Don’t be a stranger to tell me what’s on your mind. Unfortunately, I cannot just read it.”
If she could, how much more simple this assignment would be if she could actually just read her partner’s mind as easily as she could control the shadow puppets. The large number was never an issue for her. No, it was always the other person who she had a problem with in these sorts of things. Rei had one of the birds twist and soar into a nearby building, digging through the rubble as she listened carefully for some sort of...click. There had to be at least one indication of where the robots were anyway. One of the birds perched up near the window, staring down at one who was buried under the debris. They stared at each other for a long time….or at least Rei assumed she was being stared at. She had the other birds sit in different locations, her control on them slowly ceasing as they became no more alive than still toys displaying a map in her head. “Sato-san.”

If we make an effort to call it one.
What happens when it becomes a nightmare? |
Events tend to happen for a reason. Everything begins from a singular push and all the dominos fall into place after it. Yes, even from a singular decision, an entire plan could come toppling down in the long of it. And that’s how Rei found herself in this situation, standing in the back of the class, waiting for their teacher to call for the practice tests to begin. Group assignments were something that would ail even the top of schools...and hero schools as Rei has quickly learned was no exception. It made sense; the collaborative nature of heroism calling for the most friendly and well adjusted of people to carry the torch light to some kind of victory. That didn’t mean the puppet master had to like it. It was usually inefficient for her to work with other people; a crowd of shadow puppets usually being enough to cover her back if she really had to get down to the busy of it.
Yes, like a well oiled machine, she could work between herself much faster than communicating with others.
But that explanation didn’t exactly make their teacher think that this assignment was any less necessary.
The different political alliances between the students of 1-B quickly became an asset when teaming up in pairs; eventually, everyone found someone to work with at the end of it. And instead of letting the quiet kids of the class who refused to team up with anyone work alone as Rei intended...they were paired up. Rei quietly ran her hands through the feathers of the shadow bird perched upon her shoulder, mumbling something quiet to herself as she slowly tuned back in to what their teacher was explaining. “So each team will be dropped into a different area of the map and from there, you will have to rescue one of the imperiled robots from the simulated area. There should be a total of 5 per area and you all have 5 minutes to talk with your partner before we begin.”
Uwaa…. Rei glanced up at the person standing next to her, slowly running her fingers together before finally speaking up. “Sato-san.” She let the shadow puppet on her shoulder fly off, its shadowy wings soaring quickly into the air before disappearing into nothing more than dust across the dome’s surface. “Considering we don’t have much time, perhaps we can come to an agreement on what our strategy for this assignment will be.” The puppet master tented her fingers, staring straight up at Rin as their teacher began to usher them towards the next area. Rei must have slept wrong.
If there was possibly a wrong way to sleep, then the puppet master probably found it; from the way her arm ached and the stinging sensation got in her elbow. Rei sighed, kicking her legs over the wall a bit as she stared down at the long, exaggerated shadows. There was a big lump of shadow by her side, with a long floppy tongue and a long feather duster like tail. Despite herself, she let the presence comfort her. The awkward, faux movements to the static way it would just stop moving all together based on her own whim...Rei rubbed her fingers against its head, closing her eyes as she listened to the sounds of school all around her. People weren’t as easy to get along with. Perhaps in a way, that was something she had inherited from her parents. Or was that something that was learned?
Instead she just found herself standing there watching. Watching her shadow puppet run across the fields near the school. Watching as it ran across the field towards a gently rolling ball and then back over to the familiar figure after it “Fushugina-san.” Rei blinked as she slowly slid off the wall, walking slightly forward as her shadow dog would carefully plop down near her classmate. “Would you mind if we played as well?” There were many things Rei was known for; mostly challenging her class to sparring matches against an army of shadow creatures and more sparsely, not really talking to people outside of lessons. Perhaps it was merely an exception. Perhaps Rei was just bored.
She didn’t know.
Stiffly and inorganically, the shadow puppet would move again, slowly placing itself in a play bow before jumping back up and running across the field. Rei knew she’d never see Tomu actually act so silly. Serious to a fault was that dog and she knew better than anyone that he would rather sit there and be pet than ever be so active without a purpose. But this wasn’t Tomu. And she didn’t quite know how to make it more like him. Maybe if her parents were home, she could just ask them. Maybe. Rei called the great beast back, quietly petting it behind the ears. Rei stared at the mysterious girl for a moment, her eyes settled upon the face of the rabbit on her head. The puppet master slowly stood back up, running her fingers along the edge of the canine’s ears. “You must be one of the Students visiting from Seiai, right? My name is Rei Shirai. It’s nice to meet you.” With the outside world so dire, it wasn’t rare that joint training sessions were held across Japan between their students. “If you are willing to have me, I was looking for a sparring partner as well….though I apologize as I can’t promise that I would be a very good training partner.” What could only be described as an approximation of a yes, Rei beckoned Rion to follow her, quietly stepping around the ever growing chaos of quirks going off to a small quiet corner a littles away from the entrance. (Grabbed a teacher that happened to be walking by, etc)
Quietly, she readjusted her shiketsu cap and began casting shadow puppets along the ground. A resounding snarl and crack came from the base of the great beast’s throat before he bounded across the ground and towards their opponent. Five shapes of rabbits slowly began to rise from the ground, ears perked up in a battle ready position as one by one they began to chase after (and eventually overtake) the shadow dog in the charge. They would leap forward and try to hit their relatively soft bodies against Rion, some of them trying to hold onto her arms and restrain her instead. Rei cocked her hand to the side.
As many as there already were, it wasn’t enough. She needed so much more. The lack of substantial power behind the punches had to be made of somewhere. The shadow dog lunged forwards with teeth bared- growling and snarling all the while. And occasionally, a growl would come from a rabbit instead. More shadows were needed. This wasn’t enough. Rei took a deep breath, bringing up another five rabbits from the ground to charge into battle.

Rei cocked her hand off to the side, drawing shadows across the ground as shadowy figures would rise from each that stood there. As their feet would emerge from the ground, the tiny creatures would start to move; quickening their steps forward as they ran across the field. It was rare the girl would be out any time that didn’t produce long shadows; sunset was the perfect condition to create shadow puppets after all. However, Rei couldn’t sit still. Her blood almost boiled as she could only stand there very still, creating birds to fly across the sky and a great beast to chase them all. For a moment, she could feel as the shape of the rabbits would change, that ever familiar figure she knew all too well that stained her mind. That feeling of frustration and warmth filled every inch of her body.
She just wanted to feel something else.
The wind swept past the wide springfield, the sound of fire burning and lightning sizzling echoing across the way. The clash of noises echoed in Rei’s ears threatening to swallow up whole as she moved each of the rabbits in specific, erratic movements. More natural. More seamless. No it could never be enough, from the sudden reactions each would turn from a singular command and the way each would move on their own….the shadow dog plopped down by Rei’s side. A feign sense of comfort from deep within her own subconscious….and yet despite herself, she let it comfort her. She had to research more. Learn more. Find more….perhaps a sparring match was what was in order. The puppet master waved her hand and dismissed the rabbit and the birds, leaving only the wolf-like beast to pad alongside her to find an opponent.
This wasn’t enough. It couldn’t just be enough.
Against all odds of imagining they were, in the end, in the worst possible situation they could be in. Like an interlocking chain of children strapped into the world their parents had created, there was no hope. And all Rei could feel was frustration. At least that was something tangible and real. At least she could bring it up on a whim and stare at its existence as she studied here. She wondered if her parents ever felt such a thing. Rei ran her fingers across the shadow at her side, mumbling something soft and quiet under her breath, before she looked around for a suitable sparring partner.

NAME: Rei Kimura-Shirai ALIAS: The Shadow Puppet Hero AGE: 16GENDER: FemaleROLE: Student ALTER EGO: Pepettie SCHOOL: Shiketsu High SchoolCLASS: 1-B
POSITIVE TRAITS>Dedicated >Determined >Well-spoken >Focused NEGATIVE TRAITS>Cynical >Pessimistic >Self-deprecating >Traditionalist LIKES>Animals (Mostly Dogs) >House Chores >Time alone/Silence >Knitting DISLIKES>The smell of Iron >Unnecessary Killing >Cold weather >The dark Rei is someone who has all but mostly lost hope in humanity. She believes that there is no way to save the human race and all the evils that plague it unless someone can rise up and be the shining beacon. However, despite all her ambition, Rei admits that she could never reach that level and focuses almost entirely of trying to get her classmates to get there. Because of this, she often runs away with her own ideals, pushing them on everyone else around her at every turn. As much as she tries to build her classmates up, she is incredibly hard on herself; often becoming very silent at the best of times and completely self-deprecating at the worse of times. She hates herself. How much damage she can do. How many puppets she can summon. She has a pin point focus on all of these features, making herself extremely self-conscious and sometimes downright reckless in sparring matches. Once and awhile, Rei will see an animal and her entire cold persona would melt. If there is one thing in the world that has kept her sane it is the presence of animals in her life. She believes they lack the evil that humans have and that they are actually are the most precious thing and deserves so much more love. Even when she was little, she had an extreme attachment to dogs. And even to this day, she will always stop in the street if she sees a dog. Most would rightfully think that the reckless attacker Rei wouldn't ever be scared of anything. And they would be right! As long as it's not the dark that is. Rei has an extreme fear of the dark; usually sleeping with the lights on and avoiding going out at night if she can help it. When she was little, she used to sleep with her stuffed animals. Nowadays she is too prideful to even bring them with her into her dorm room. HEIGHT: 4'9 WEIGHT: 99 lbs EYE COLOR: Red HAIR COLOR: Blonde FACECLAIM NAME: Rumia FACECLAIM SERIES: Touhou
Rei has blonde hair that is cut around her chin. She usually styles it with a bow on the side of her head, though more often than not, she'll forget and just go to class with her hair a mess. As per Shiketsu rules, she is rarely seen without the (-as Rei puts it) "Stupid hat" and so she doesn't think that messy hair is a really big issue.
Inherited as a side effect of her quirk, Rei's eyes are a deep red that slightly glows whenever she activates her quirk. She has occasionally tried to use it as a light source for using her quirk...but it doesn't glow enough to really cast a good enough shadow. As far as Rei can remember, her parents were always here and there. Leaving her alone at the house for sometimes days at a time, coming home with blood on their clothes and weapons left on the floor. Ever since she was a child, Rei knew she was almost being raised by the family dog, a giant beast who'd grumpily resigned to hang out without throughout the day. To keep them company, she'd even make shadow puppets to run about the house, finding solace in making it a little more lively.
On some days, it was just her and her dad, having weird conversations and impromptu staring contests. Sometimes her mom was there too. Occasionally, she'd join in the weird conversations. Other times she'd keep her distance. When Rei would recount her memories at school, her mind always would try to go there first. However, sometimes, they'd seem to be distracted, quiet. And Rei would become all too focused on the fact they would call her by the wrong name.
No, her comfort quickly became the people she say on TV; news broadcasts about the latest villain attack and the hero's desperate attempts to control it all. Rei wondered if she could help. She wondered if she helped her parents would be proud of her. So she told them. And at the rightful age of 10, they took her with them to what they were doing all this time.
The vigilantes Red Rabbit and Doppelganger took their daughter with them into a villain headquarters and she watched as her mother slaughtered all of them without mercy. Perhaps it was her scared expression, or maybe the next day they knew better, but they didn't take her those after that. And just as quickly as she wanted to be a hero, Rei decided that it wasn't worth it.
Tsutomu became her anchor on the world. The singular good thing she would take with her everywhere. They were inseparable, an endless source of comfort and the best friend Rei never knew she needed. When he was gone, Rei wasn't sure what to do anymore, and maybe that's why it was during that time that Chiyo Kimura had disappeared. She knew her father was doing his best. But that wasn't good enough.
When all hope was lost, She remembered seeing the video of Afterglow and the final words she said. Rei took her father's last name and applied for Shiketsu, managing to get through the entrance exam after some training and getting placed in 1-B. From rabbits to dogs to even ducks, the visual effects of the puppet itself is usually arbitrary when it comes to actual physical strength. However, their general movement abilities and size are dependent on which she uses.
Rabbits: The bare basics for Rei, she can create up to 10 of them in a singular post. They are generally no bigger than a ball that can fit in the palm of her hand and can run the fastest at 45 mph. When they hit, it's about the strength of a light tap of the shoulder.
Birds: A slightly more advanced technique, she can create 5 of them in a singular post. They are slightly larger at the size of a medium sized bird. With about 15 of them, she can use the birds to carry her and fly at 30 mph. When they hit, it's about the strength of someone bumping into you in a crowd.
Dog: Her singular saving grace in terms of offensive power, she can create 1 dog in a singular post. They are around the size of a great dane and can run around 30 mph. When they bite, it's with the bite force of paperclip getting stuck on your finger- sometimes occasionally bruising the skin if they get a running start. It has a striking resemblance to her late pet dog, Tsutomu. QUIRK DRAWBACKS: Rei's quirk is completely useless in total darkness. She must have at least one light source to create a shadow puppet and without it, she is no better than a someone who is quirkless. Similarly, if it is so bright that no shadow can be cast, she cannot create any shadow puppets either. The more shadow puppets she make, the more mentally taxing it is on her mind. With 10 shadow puppets, Rei will have trouble keeping track of her own movements as she controls the puppets. At 15 and up, she gets physically incapable of focusing on her own body and must focus slowly on making sure that the puppets can move individually. This makes her a sitting duck in battle and truly as to rely on the puppets to keep her safe.
Alone, the shadow puppets are relatively weak. One rabbit by itself has the strength of something lightly tapping you. What they make up for in lack of strength however, is the sheer volume of them all. You can definitely stop a shadow puppet, but you can't stop them all.SKILL NAME: Enhanced Endurance SKILL RANK: Silver SKILL DESCRIPTION: They can run at max speed without getting tired for 5 posts.
