If we make an effort to call it one.
What happens when it becomes a nightmare? |
Events tend to happen for a reason. Everything begins from a singular push and all the dominos fall into place after it. Yes, even from a singular decision, an entire plan could come toppling down in the long of it. And that’s how Rei found herself in this situation, standing in the back of the class, waiting for their teacher to call for the practice tests to begin. Group assignments were something that would ail even the top of schools...and hero schools as Rei has quickly learned was no exception. It made sense; the collaborative nature of heroism calling for the most friendly and well adjusted of people to carry the torch light to some kind of victory. That didn’t mean the puppet master had to like it. It was usually inefficient for her to work with other people; a crowd of shadow puppets usually being enough to cover her back if she really had to get down to the busy of it.
Yes, like a well oiled machine, she could work between herself much faster than communicating with others.
But that explanation didn’t exactly make their teacher think that this assignment was any less necessary.
The different political alliances between the students of 1-B quickly became an asset when teaming up in pairs; eventually, everyone found someone to work with at the end of it. And instead of letting the quiet kids of the class who refused to team up with anyone work alone as Rei intended...they were paired up. Rei quietly ran her hands through the feathers of the shadow bird perched upon her shoulder, mumbling something quiet to herself as she slowly tuned back in to what their teacher was explaining. “So each team will be dropped into a different area of the map and from there, you will have to rescue one of the imperiled robots from the simulated area. There should be a total of 5 per area and you all have 5 minutes to talk with your partner before we begin.”
Uwaa…. Rei glanced up at the person standing next to her, slowly running her fingers together before finally speaking up. “Sato-san.” She let the shadow puppet on her shoulder fly off, its shadowy wings soaring quickly into the air before disappearing into nothing more than dust across the dome’s surface. “Considering we don’t have much time, perhaps we can come to an agreement on what our strategy for this assignment will be.” The puppet master tented her fingers, staring straight up at Rin as their teacher began to usher them towards the next area. [nospaces] [attr="class","mon2"] [attr="class","monlyrics2"]私は怪物です [attr="class","monbody2"] A small part of him didn't want to be here- and, while only a small part, it was quite the loud minority raging in his head. He was raised to keep his emotions under wraps, to maintain a face that wouldn't crack, no matter the pressure, but anger was the one thing could manage to get a grip around those actions and ideas of his- that he had experienced so far, anyway. He was contempt with being on the sidelines, to not be in the fighting, to not be a hero apart of the family if he could still just serve.[break][break] But it was no matter- an order, not only from the one set to look over him, but from the big man himself. A pale hand would come up and adjust the hat that sat proudly on his head, marking him as practically the property of the domain he sat in, a place for others to foster their paths of heroism and craft a career out of those obscene powers they held. Black wisps would slowly curl out from his sleeve, a bleak reminder of what had landed him in this place- but it wasn't all bad, for it was also the reason he was taken up.[break][break] The reason why he had been given a home- he couldn't act spoiled and hate those who took him in just for sending him to this place in hopes of fostering his talent further. He was never a social one, his blank face always making him quite the... difficult one to approach, his speech being quite unfamiliar and unfriendly. He knew of his faults, but he couldn't stray from such a path- however, such a thing meant he was evidently left alone for when collaboration became essential to move forwards in the course. Surely, whoever had gotten him would curse the heavens for his appearance, but he wouldn't mind.[break][break] They weren't worth any more irritation than they already garnered, in all honesty.[break][break] Unlike his new assignment partner, Rin had somewhat predicted this turn of events- it was unlikely that a group assignment could even be done alone if it were issued by Shiketsu of all schools. The teacher spoke their verdict and yellow hues would slowly trail down to the girl a little over half a foot shorter than himself, a brow raised at the black figure on her shoulder, the faintest similarity to those black extra "limbs" extending visibly from the left part of his body. The other wished to strategize? Yeah, that would be ideal, but what kind of random ideas would be running amock in the girl's head, he could only wonder.[break][break] Even if it was an elite school, Rin still had a sense of elitism stuck in his bones, unable to remove it even though his handlers had told him that people here would either be of equal standing to him- or better. His yellow hues would drift away from the girl and back to the teacher, his voice cold and blunt. ``I'm sure it's not difficult to take back one single droid, Shirai-san.`` His words were contradictory to his prior thoughts and, although a bit irritated, he wouldn't let such little things show- part of it was his quirk, he knew this, and he tried his best to smother it.[break][break] ``Can't your critters scope out the area?`` Hey, it's not like he was going to offer nothing to the table. Rei cocked her head to the side, raising an eyebrow slightly before looking away. She didn’t trust him. Well who did she trust anyway? The puppet master slowly lifted her hands up to block out the sun, squinting her eyes as she stared through the glass dome that surrounded them. People were a lot less easy to get along with. With a flick of her wrist, shadowy figures began to rise from the ground underneath her, a couple flapping their wings as they escaped before flying up into the sky. “You make a fair point.” There wasn’t any room to trust people in her mind. Like a finite well inside her, the more that is taken away the less there is for the things that actually mattered. People were fickle, and dangerous. Something terrible and cruel. Rei found it ironic for just a moment that their eye color and hair colors were inverses of one another.
Though it wasn’t as though something as simple as that could make him feel any the more interesting to her.
Their teacher parked the bus in front of a ruined cityscape, building crumpling and rubble scattered across the ground. Rei could swear she almost heard a slight humming in the air from the thick smell of smoke that permeated from every corner. She looked at Rin again, glancing at him up and down before sending her army of birds up into the smoke. “How shall we deal with the fire once we head in?” Rei spoke up as her eyes seemed to scan across the ground; the simple view of what her birds were seeing implanted in her mind as she merely just stared down at the fallen buildings underneath them. “I trust that you have a way to deal with the smoke at the very least. Don’t be a stranger to tell me what’s on your mind. Unfortunately, I cannot just read it.”
If she could, how much more simple this assignment would be if she could actually just read her partner’s mind as easily as she could control the shadow puppets. The large number was never an issue for her. No, it was always the other person who she had a problem with in these sorts of things. Rei had one of the birds twist and soar into a nearby building, digging through the rubble as she listened carefully for some sort of...click. There had to be at least one indication of where the robots were anyway. One of the birds perched up near the window, staring down at one who was buried under the debris. They stared at each other for a long time….or at least Rei assumed she was being stared at. She had the other birds sit in different locations, her control on them slowly ceasing as they became no more alive than still toys displaying a map in her head. “Sato-san.”

[nospaces] [attr="class","mon2"] [attr="class","monlyrics2"]私は怪物です [attr="class","monbody2"] Hey, she was onto something! Oh, how wonderful it would be if the other could just read his mind- get an idea of his thought process, hopefully not invade into some of his emotionally-fueled thoughts, and finish this efficiently... how wonderful such an ideal world would be, yet they'd be stuck in this crummy reality, an expectation placed upon him to converse with the fellow hero-in-training. He would simply nod along to the other's proclamation of him being right- ah, had she not thought of such a thing? Well, that was... alright... maybe... perhaps it had just skipped her mind, no need to continuously look down on those you're supposed to work with...[break][break] Oh, but he couldn't help but dip into that forbidden well just a bit, subtle scorn sitting on his features before returning to blank. As the bus made its way through the simulation, his eyes would lay upon their destination- and, of course, it wasn't as simple as retrieving some stray droids that may have been caught in the outer rings of a large fight or some minimum disaster, no, they would be dealing with quite the dangerous one. Looking down at the curling wisps of black as she asked him about dealing with the fire.[break][break] Would that work? Were his gusts strong enough? ``The smoke, most likely...`` Waving his hand around, watching the small tendrils slowly drift and dissipate into nothing, he would once more look back at the building. ``The fire, a probability.`` It seems his plan of sending one of those oddities into the building to scout wasn't a horrible idea, after all. After the smallest amount of waiting, with a raised brow from a classmate or two as they made their way into the danger zone, Rin would simply give a nod as the other asked if they should begin their move.[break][break] ``I hope you can route properly.`` His expectations were quite high, even with all the looking down upon- these were the people that were supposed to be equals to him, right? ``If we have to deal with any annoyances...`` Those faint curls of black would suddenly increase in intensity as black smog begin to consume his right hand, a claw forming as black slowly revealed itself through his collar. Once more pulling down on the school's signature hat, he would nod to his temporary teammate. ``Lead the way.`` Oh, how he hoped this would only be retrieval- dealing with any kind of offensive robots would be quite annoying.[break][break] It was unlikely, though. This wasn't a combat zone simulation, after all. “I hope so too considering it’s quite possibly the only thing useful I can do with my quirk. Hopefully no annoyances and hiccups will happen along the way.” Despite her own words, it all felt dry...though lacking any sarcasm you’d think would be accompanied by this sort of statement. Rei gave a tip of her cap back over to her temporary partner and lined the pictures up in her head, blinking once or twice in total silence before beginning to walk through the ruined streets. She wasn’t a stranger to this sort of sight. Destruction and rubble lining the roads, the thick small of oil and smoke permeating from every corner. People were never so kind..and for just a moment, she could swear she could smell the distinct scent of iron...but it was most likely just her imagination. Rei pressed her hands together, folding her fingers and letting the shadow puppet drag across the ground.
They would walk through the building in relative silence, only the sound of crackling fire there to fill the void. One by one, as they would pass in the right direction, the birds would flock towards the puppet master, her eyes carefully trained across their sight as they maneuvered around the debris. Rei ran her fingers across the shadow dog’s head, holding her breath as she sent them into the room. Surprisingly, it all seemed uneventful. No surprises from their teacher that had been his usual style of teaching. Rei found it quiet...and efficient for once in these training camps- as the shadow dog began to pull the robot out of the rubble, an explosion erupted from the building across the street, another group crashing through the window as mechanical voices called out from the other side…..
Ha? Rei squinted her eyes, slowly bringing the robot to its feet before turning back towards Rin. “Sato-san. Should we go help them?” Of course their assignment was already complete. “Rescue a robot” was not “go investigate the crashing noise from the opposite building” Rei knew that. But she hated not knowing. And not helping was probably far more worse than that. She had such high standards for her classmates...and far more faith than she should admit. But also the chances that this is a test from their eccentric teacher was also…

[nospaces] [attr="class","mon2"] [attr="class","monlyrics2"]私は怪物です [attr="class","monbody2"] Even if it was a truth, that part of Rin which knew how to be a good person stung after hearing of the other's tone that they took with themself. Perhaps, through those six years of classes, a certain someone had managed to rub off on him oh so slightly. But, in the end, it was just a simple sting, something that faded within moments and a simple feeling of annoyance that the other wasn't as capable of him- of course, finding someone this quickly could only be done with the use of her quirk, but he wasn't about to give the other credit![break][break] He was trained to be courteous through the way of speech only, his mind being far too rude to people who roamed around him, something that, even if the one he was told to take care had told him to work on his rude actions towards others, he would find difficult fixing. How would he have turned out if given a proper upbringing? Well, in his opinion, thinking of such things was unnecessary and a waste of time, but the question would something prod into his mind at times. As they finally began their trip through the building, Rin would make sure to keep his lips sealed, not wishing for any kind of small talk.[break][break] In all honesty, it felt all too... easy, maybe? Something about it all made him think he had somehow left Shiketsu and everyone coincidentally had put on their old uniforms for this assignment. As a dog of shadow made their way into a room, he would follow as soon as it looked to be fine- retrieving the robot was far too easy. Was this something that their teacher would do? Yellow hues trained on the dog trying to pull the robot out, they would quickly flick to the sound of something loud.[break][break] Well, of course something had to go wrong. It was only natural for a "hero", after all.[break][break] He would take a second to think- the question on his mind was one repeated by the girl next to him, his eyes going to the robot and back to the crowd. Taking a deep breath, he would turn his back from the window and begin moving to the door- yeah, there was no reason for him to help, right? This assignment... it was not one that included combat. By all means, this was not apart of the instructions given- and, even if a true hero would go and help that group, doing so just meant possibly getting into something that's more trouble than it's worth.[break][break] ``We're-`` He would slightly trip in his next step, catching himself by planting his hand on the wall, irritation present on his face slowly fading as he picked himself up once more- ah, that would bring up memories of the clumsy lady back at the manor. Someone who was rather different than the dragon hero, one whose nature would make him believe that they would help anyone with all their effort. A part of him reconsidered- even if this was something small, would doing something that would make that person disappointed in him be worth it?[break][break] With a deep breath, the pause had only lasted for a moment, but he shook his head- ``I guess we can see if it's part of the test.``[newclass=.mon2]width:340px;padding:40px;background:#170B3A;position:relative;border-top-left-radius:20%;border-top-right-radius:20%;[/newclass] [newclass=.mon2 img]height:125px;width:125px;padding:15px;position:absolute;bottom:-50px;right:-35px;[/newclass] [newclass=.monlyrics2]text-align:center;font-family:verdana;font-size:18px;text-transform:uppercase;color:#fafafa;letter-spacing:1px;[/newclass] [newclass=.monbody2]width:340px;padding:40px;padding-bottom:20px;background:#fafafa;font-size:10px;line-height:16px;text-align:justify;font-family:verdana;color:#555;[/newclass] [newclass=.monbody2 b]color:#890F34;[/newclass] [newclass=.montag]text-align:center;font-size:9px;[/newclass] [newclass=.montag a]font-size:9px;text-transform:lowercase;[/newclass] [newclass=.cred]text-align:center;font-size:8px;color:rgb(132, 132, 132);letter-spacing:1px;font-family:verdana;[/newclass] [newclass=.cred a]color:rgb(132, 132, 132);font-size:8px;letter-spacing:1px;font-family:verdana;[/newclass]

Rei cocked her head to the side, popping her knuckles with her other hand before she slowly headed opened up one of the windows and sent the birds on her shoulder out towards the sound. As always, she couldn’t quite decipher the meaning behind his pause or even why there had to be a pause to begin with. But at the very least, it wasn’t as hard as trying to decipher what her mother would mean when she said something. Cryptic and lost...though Rei supposed the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in that case. She slowly extended her fingers, dropping one or two more shadows on the ground and letting a couple of rabbits rise up. The puppet master blinked, slowly heading down the stairwell as the great beast carried the robot out of the simulation area. “Sato-san is much nicer than he acts, huh?”
Despite however it was she came onto this path, there really was no force of good in her life. No one taught her moral compasses- just how such a thing could be abused for the gains of those stronger than her. But she was a good listener and if someone she was working with wanted to do something...well Rei wasn’t about to say anything against it. After all, arguing was a much more stressful affair. Rei flipped over to the different images in her head, scanning the building inside quietly before nodding and continuing to move forward. Through the second building and the continuing rubble, the growing sound of clatter just beyond the door echoing down the stairs as the pair would inch forward.
”You didn’t say anything about this!”
”What are the chances I WASN’T going to do something like this? Use your brain for a minute here.”
They were, by all means done with this assignment. Nothing was truly stopping them from turning around here and just leaving the premises….Rei quietly flicked her wrist, creating a shadow rabbit from between the darkness and sending it into the room to listen in more intently. “Sato-san.” Her voice was hushed and quiet, focused purely on the small gap of a door in front of them. “Should we turn back now or should we help?” At this point, it was almost abundantly clear that this girl lacked any measure of thinking for herself...or maybe it was that she had a feeling that when in a fight against Rin- whether it was verbal or physical, she wouldn’t be able to win.
Regardless, the fate of their fellow classmates truly felt like it was in the palm of their hands.
How fun. LAIKA OF THQ

[nospaces] [attr="class","mon2"] [attr="class","monlyrics2"]私は怪物です [attr="class","monbody2"] Rin could feel irritation boiling as the other spoke on how nice he was- he was smart enough to tell that he really wasn't, this "act of kindness" simply being... logical! The teacher that had assigned this, even if he must abide by the government's regulation, was always looking for some way to spice up their tests, even if they were all very novice when it came to heroism, as first-year students were. He would click his tongue, averting his gaze from the girl- kindness was a weakness in his eyes, something that he would have to hide. This wasn't kindness.[break][break] Not only would it be sad if they were to not pass with great marks because they ignored an evident crisis, but it'd also be an inconvenience to have an entire class get scolded if it were the case of their classmate's idiocy. As they made their way out of the first building, they would drop the robot civilian off on the sidewalk- along with any rescue persons if in a reasonable distance- and allow them to be on their way with a couple of instructions; always so scary with how life-like those droids could be! The people who made them surely were geniuses.[break][break] Oh, but people who were so smart always had those odd quirks to them, those personality traits that always made them an annoyance to converse with. If he were to stick as a butler, he would surely have to be courteous to their kind at some point... well, Shiketsu could also be a training ground for that kind of thing as well, couldn't it? So many oddballs... sure, they irritated him quite a bit, but he had to somehow control such feelings- anger was the one thing that always seemed to get to him, no matter how much he tried to calm it within those six years of practice.[break][break] As they made their way through the rubble without a peep, those voices would be the first thing to stand out amongst the sound of flickering flames and falling debris, a brow raised at the voice of their teacher- the fingers of his unturned hand coming up to pinch the bridge of his nose, Rin would exhale his grievance. ``Out of all areas, it had to be right next to us... this feels premeditated.`` Well, it wasn't like he didn't stand out as one of the more uncooperative folk of the school. ``We've come this far...``[break][break] He would raise his blackened hand, a deep breath taken as he closed his eyes, that small draft that barely noticeable suddenly becoming more intense. ``Hold on to your hat.`` Uttering a warning with little time to follow on such, the increasingly intense draft would suddenly focus in on one point, rushing forward in the direction Rin had been holding his hand out, the wind taking the feeble door off its rusted and partly broken hinges, allowing the wooden construction to fly a few meters forwards as Rin stared into the room. ``So, what's going on here?``[break][break] Although his expression was still blank, annoyance was much more noticeable than before. Rei quickly grabbed her hat out of the air as the gust of wind threatened to pull it off; the SLAM! of the rusted door bringing her eyes up to the two faint figures in front of them. Her eyes moved between Rin and their teacher again, slowly moving her hands up. ”Oh? Sato-Kun, Shirai-kun, how nice of you to join us.” A small chide grin curved up his face, his eyes lowering ever so slightly as he tossed their classmate to the side. It wasn’t rare that they would be met with this strange persona he’d put on- often playing the villain whenever he could help it during training sessions. The puppet master quickly moved her army of puppets in to charge, forcing them to at least remain at a distance from everyone. Her eyes quietly lowered, the haze of her mind becoming split between the million screens that sat in front of her.
Fight the teacher.
Was that the assignment?
No, her instructions were to “save” a robot. Fighting the teacher had very little to do with the assignment itself. Rei took a sharp breath in, holding her hand against the wall as she dipped behind a wall. “Sato-san…” Her hand sat between the light of the window and the wall in front of her, vague shadows sitting in the corner. “I’ll leave it to you.” Pop! Pop! Pop! Rabbits flung off and out of the wall, birds sprouting into battle from thin air and another shadow hound rising up to stand by the door. Lagomorphs would cover the Draconis Hero, avians flying overhead and ramming themselves straight into the teacher’s face. One dog would stay next to the girl while the other would charge straight in to try and grab one of the robots.
Their teacher cocked his hand to the side, that small sinister smile stuck on his face as he began to deflect some of the weak winged birds out of the air. Whirrrrrrr…. The pendulum in his hand rocked, spinning in the air faster and faster until finally reaching out to strike Rin, taking a sharp turn to stop the shadow dog from moving closer to the hostages. It pulled back, the edge of it giving up a humming sound as it focused on the boy in view. One of the rabbits would hop into view of the first attack, but the second would come far too quick.

[nospaces] [attr="class","mon2"] [attr="class","monlyrics2"]私は怪物です [attr="class","monbody2"] Ah, that teacher of theirs- quite a weird one, really. He always seemed to love taking the role of the villain, wishing to cause as much turmoil during his assignments whenever possible, causing students to flip out in confusion as the seasoned hero turned on those he was supposed to teach- another sigh, irritation creeping on his features more and more as he watched their educator throw a student to the side. The gentle squeeze of his fist, that humane part of him tugging to fight back, although his more logical and trained side would quickly qualm said things.[break][break] They were nobody in the eyes of the test. They were supposed to save robots, not his fellow classmates. He shouldn't care about them- them failing jut meant he'd pass more triumphantly, right? As the other dipped out of view, he would hold his head in his hands for a moment- ``Are you kidding?`` Looking over at the teacher, he would click his tongue as those shadowy markings flared for but a moment, the black starting to consume more of his person as his claws increased in size. As the pendulum began swinging, Rin would prepare for what was to come- this man was someone who held far more expertise than every one of the students combined.[break][break] If he truly wished to take out the class, then he would do so in an instant. This seemed more and more like a test as it went on, the grim reality that he would have to stand his ground ever apparent as his eyes trained on the weapon. Holding up his shaded arm, the pendulum strike would quickly strike and make him lose his footing for but a moment, sending him back- before he quickly rose to his feet amidst a few collapsed boxes and rotted wood. ``... that's annoying.`` It hurt- it really did, but it wasn't enough for him to yield.[break][break] After a second of preparation, he would quickly leap himself forward, using a gust of wind to accelerate himself forward towards the foe- holding out a fist, he'd hope for his first strike to hit if anything, his empowered strikes hopefully enough to push back this menace of a "villain". Sadly, with that gust of wind, he wouldn't be able to muster a tornado for a bit- he could only be disappointed in himself as his fist guided itself towards the teacher's stomach, the second fist looking to connect with his face. | It only has be a dream
If we make an effort to call it one.
What happens when it becomes a nightmare? |
Rei’s vision blurred, the same scene playing in millions of different directions in her head she slowly lifted her hand up again to keep up the mini army of shadow puppets that were quickly flooding the room. More rabbits would flood in and chase after the shadowed dragon, quickly following up each of his wind strikes with bonking off the opponent’s leg….slowly inching him farther away with each strike. Birds would swoop in under the ceiling, distracted that would swoop out of the way as Rin’s winds would hit. Rei took a sharp breath in, her muscles tensing up as she let yet another shadowy beast rise from the group. She resisted the urge to dismiss them all. To silence the echoing noises that filled her brain...she could do it afterwards. Right now, they had to grab the robots.
Their teacher flipped his pendulum around, swiping against the rabbits under foot and spinning it quickly to whip them up to catch Rin’s winds before tossing the entire group over to the shadow dogs near the hostages. Rei ceased up, digging her nails into the palm of her hand as she quickly pulled the beasts away then wrapping the rabbits around the hostages. Like little ants, they’d begin to pick each of the robots up and take them out of the room. Grrrrrrr… Attention quickly drew back to the “villain” near the edge of the room, his pendulum swiping through the air as to neutralize the winds. Faster and faster it would spin...and eventually it was clear he wasn’t holding back.
One of her birds swooped down, settling down onto his shoulder and whispering into Rin’s ear. “Sato-san, I got the hostages. How do we neutralize the threat?” Another quick strike of the pendulum would wizz towards him, quickly intercepted by another bird and straight towards the wind dragon again. Rei couldn’t swarm him; only 19 or so puppets left in the room after the shadow dog and rabbits ran to bring the robots to safety. That wasn’t nearly enough to do anything….they had to come back.
