the things that you might like don't grow inside of me
Of all the responses that Satoru was expecting back, that was not among them. Something had already seemed off in the sense that the kid hadn't been panicking or trying to swim back, and much of the reason he'd yelled those specific words was to see if they'd been unconscious or otherwise incapable of swimming. Evidently that was not the case, however, as the response that came back was one of a surprisingly calm individual. Jumbled as the initial thoughts were they seemed to be following a logic of some sort and the word usage was correct, and what movements Satoru could physically see in the darkness were coordinated - and judging by the next response given the kid clearly understood what the adult had been asking, although the was a spark of irritation from Satoru at the implied attitude that came with the opposing response and the following question.
The kid didn't seem all that dumb or unaware of his surroundings which implied he knew what he was doing and where he was. By extension the only reasonable conclusion to be made was that the boy was in his element, likely due to a water based Quirk that suddenly had the teacher feeling more than a little foolish over the concern he had shown.
Mind, what the hell else was Satoru supposed to assume if he saw someone that far out in the water at night?
As the boy started to edge back closer to shore - although without his own Quirk it took a minute or two for Satoru to notice the movement - the adult would take a couple of steps back from the water's edge to drop back and sit on the dry sand, a hand running over his face to rub out the stress and noted fatigue that came with his initial assumptions. It was just as well, he supposed. He was going to have to get used to dealing with kids and teens sooner or later before the semester got well and truly under way, although Satoru couldn't help but hope they had a bit more common sense and a degree of consideration for other people by comparison. His hair was going to go gray early otherwise if every other day had anxiety spikes to this degree.
As his hand dropped away from his face to rest on his knee, though, the kid that had been out in the water had finally returned to shore and started to approach him. While removing the irritation he'd felt from his face had long become an old habit just by virtue of being forced to deal with the public in a courteous manner during his days in the police force, putting a smile on it was just that far out of reach as Satoru regarded the boy. His clothes were soaked, but... that was about it. The kid's skin was weirdly dry by comparison, and once again the teacher couldn't help but feel foolish for jumping to conclusions regardless of how reasonable they might have seemed at the time.
"Thanks for the compliment... I think. What were you doing out there? Sun's already set." Satoru started, head tilting slightly as he looked the boy over.
"You know you're going to worry a lot of people doing stuff like that, it's not safe for most to go swimming after dark. You got any older siblings or the like looking out for you? Your parents?"

the things that you might like don't grow inside of me
It was a funny thing, how quickly events in life could pull a complete 180 from the direction they'd initially been heading in.
When Satoru had first been contacted by UA he had been confused. Both by the idea of a high school of any sort being interested in him for any reason as his work had never once crossed paths with the academy, and later on the idea that they'd wanted to hire him. After that had followed a fair amount of doubt. Both in the sanity of the institution for approaching someone with no qualifications or experience as an instructor or teacher of adults let alone children, and later on doubts as to whether or not it was the type of responsibility Satoru was prepared to handle even had he been qualified. Mind, it hadn't been the first time. Doubt had been a constant companion in the man's life ever since childhood, and Satoru would've been concerned as to whether or not he was sane - the school's own reasoning aside - if he hadn't taken time to consider the offer before accepting it.
It'd only taken a day, yes, but relatively speaking that was a very long time for Satoru with how quickly he tended to weigh pros and cons, to look at risk assessment and come to a decision after considering all of the facts and intangibles. But that feeling of nervousness had never vanished. Not through the process of becoming accredited as an educator - as rushed as the process had been - nor in the weeks and days leading up to the start of the semester. Frankly speaking Satoru had no idea what to expect from a bunch of teenagers beyond his own experiences as a kid, and to say that those memories were faded or otherwise twisted by personal bias would've been an understatement. Applying his experiences and the world view as filtered by them to his students wouldn't have only been folly, it would've been the height of both arrogance and willful ignorance.
That said... all of it was up in the air at this point. While his colleagues had been forwarded their class rosters, lesson plans and other information relevant to their jobs as educators... Satoru had not. Initially he'd wondered if UA's senior staff had finally come to their senses and started second guessing their decision to hire him - but no. No, it was something that Satoru was all too familiar with after years and years of paperwork and administrative red tape.
Clerical errors. Didn't know where or how yet - it could've involved something with entrance exam scores and class assignment, anything in between - but until it got sorted Satoru had nothing set in stone for the start of the semester. Which was only a few days away.
Well, whenever that all got sorted and Satoru was given his students and their portfolios... it would be hectic. A lot of work in a very short amount of time to make up for what had been lost, but that was fine. Satoru was used to working under pressure, and the idea of it didn't bother him at all compared to the job that was to come after. If nothing else it left the man with a lot of time on his hands until the related materials were located and mistakes fixed, and Satoru had done as he always did on leave. Walk, or more accurately wander. Musutafu was a new town, and while UA had provided him with accommodations within the campus grounds staying locked up in those buildings was going to drive him insane without something to do.
One could only read so many books before you started to lose your taste for them and crave something different. A few minutes spent digging up clothes out of his bags that weren't sweats or shorts and Satoru was out, clad in what could've best been described as business casual - a white shirt and slacks. Nothing fancy and maybe a bit much for what amounted to a day of exploration but it was what he was used to and Satoru was nothing if not a creature of habit after years of training and instilled discipline.
It was at the end of one such day that Satoru now found himself, finally making his way back to the campus grounds, hands in his pockets and walking at a fairly leisurely pace. All things considered it'd been... well, not necessarily a productive day but at least a relaxing one. Nothing new per se but a few shops that Satoru hadn't been aware of before had been discovered, and with summer drawing to a close it wasn't so hot as to strike outside Satoru's comfort zone. Especially not here. Musutafu was a bit too close to the ocean for that whereas Satoru had grown up in the mountains - the difference between his and their ideas of "hot" were practically night and day. Speaking of... as his path took him to the boardwalk that ran along the city beach the former detective couldn't help but pause and look out at the darkening waters. Despite having lived the last several years of his life in Tokyo much of his experiences were in the inland districts and wards, not the central ones like Shinjuku that were all but adjacent to the water. It wasn't bad, necessarily, but it was different.
Different enough that it took Satoru a moment to register the fact that there was something bobbing out in the water, although the way it seemed to blend into the waves... it was hard to tell with the sun setting and evening giving way to night proper. Squinting against the darkness, Satoru didn't like the feeling he was getting from whatever it was he was looking at - but it wasn't until the man gave into curiosity and reached out with his Quirk to "ping" the patch of water that he realized what he was looking at, jaw dropping slack for a moment in equal parts surprise and disbelief. Half a second later Satoru was in motion, sliding down the concrete slope that elevated the roadway from the beach and running out towards the water.
"HEY!" Satoru shouted, hoping to at least get the kid's attention. Something at the back of his mind told Satoru that something wasn't right with this picture - the kid didn't seem at all distressed or struggling - but he was floating out to deeper water and that didn't bode well. Was it a rip tide of some sort? While Satoru was a strong swimmer the thought was enough to make him pause and hesitate as his shoes touched the water's edge as the last thing he needed was to put himself in a situation where both he and the kid were in need of help. The pause only lasted all of a moment, though, before Satoru was yanking his shoes off his feet as they'd only get in the way if he absolutely needed to go in after the kid.
"Can you hear me? Are you able to get back to shore?"

As far as heroes go, Satoru tends to stand out for all of the "wrong" reasons. Not because he makes an effort to; quite the opposite. There is no separation between his off duty and work personas, no hero "uniform" or costume, and even his hero name was slapped onto him by the public and police rather than chosen - what you see with Satoru is, at least at a glance, exactly what you get. Having been born into borderline poverty with no flashy Quirk to quickly elevate himself to stardom Satoru has found himself in the curious position of believing in both extremes to a certain extent. Yes, what the world gives you at birth does matter and can dictate your entire life. It certainly did for him and his family, and the world is not fair. It doesn't care for you or anyone else in it, and the things Satoru has seen over the years working homicide has shown him just how ugly it can get and how far people can wander from the path of basic human decency. There is no amount of explaining or rationalizing that can make either reality right or acceptable, and towards that end Satoru's life experiences has made him extremely cynical and wary. While he may not expect the worst of people off the bat until proven wrong that isn't the same as saying he is surprised when that comes to pass, and between that and his experiences towards the end of his police career the man has come to keep most people at arm's length unless he has been given very good reason to do otherwise.
That said, the man is not all doom and gloom.
While he considers the above opinions to be objectively true, Satoru also recognizes that it isn't quite so simple. He himself had proven to be the exception to that rule through nothing but hard work and effort, and had managed to reach a place in life he wanted to be even prior to the identification and training of his Quirk. By extension the man sees no reason why anyone else couldn't do the same - you may be limited by what you were given to start with, but if used properly those innate talents and abilities can grow and mature into something much more. Similarly, while Satoru might not have the best opinion of most until given reason to change his mind that isn't the same as saying he's necessarily a rude person. Years spent in the police force operating both with civilians and answering to superiors and then latter the Hero Association has taught Satoru both civility and respect for others, and while he may not necessarily get close to other people he is still perfectly able and willing to converse with them in a polite and civil manner. While this patience is quick to erode in the face of outright arrogance or those who fail to offer the same courtesy it's enough for Satoru to get by in life with relatively minimal difficulty, and as far as he's concerned that's all that matters.
HEIGHT: 5' 8" WEIGHT: 161 lbs EYE COLOR: Black HAIR COLOR: Black FACECLAIM NAME: Roy Mustang FACECLAIM SERIES: Fullmetal Alchemist
So far as external appearances go, Satoru is about as normal as they come. Standing in at 5' 8" and weighing in at a well built 161 pounds, the man's frequent choice in business casual attire tends to hide the results born from years' worth of police and hero training very well. Beyond that his complexion is fair, and his black hair cut relatively short. Aside from not really seeing the point in standing out this almost painfully average appearance is very useful in the sense that it allows the man to quickly and easily blend into crowds.
Born to a fairly impoverished family in rural Japan, Satoru wasn't exactly blessed with an abundance of opportunities during the first several years of his life. Aside from his family situation lacking any individual members of note so far as society was concerned, Satoru himself was initially believed to be Quirkless for much of his childhood and young adult life as he failed to manifest anything resembling the three traditional Quirk types. As he continued to advance through primary education the only skills of note Satoru would demonstrate would be a relatively remarkable aptitude for sports despite being otherwise a normal stock human physically, as well as a degree of academic excellence. Neither seemed to be the result of anything more than hard work, as that was something Satoru came to believe the value of very early on. He'd been born into overwhelming average-ness. Satoru never once blamed his family for it as they were simply playing with the cards that they'd been dealt, but by that same measure he refused to stay where he had started.
The world wasn't fair and it wasn't going to do him any favors - so the only way to get out was to claw his way up with his own two hands, Quirk or no. Unlike many his age Satoru did not aspire to be a hero as he knew full well what he was capable of, and wasting his time on fruitless endeavors would only cost him in the long run. Instead he worked with what he had been given, graduating at the top of his class by an impressive margin and immediately applying to Tokyo University with the intent to major in criminal justice. Taking advantage of the scholarship granted by the university, the man would power through to earn a bachelor's degree by the time he was 21 before directly enrolling in a law enforcement academy for two years, during which his Quirk would finally be identified. Not that it mattered much - he'd already given up on that dream and intended on using his prior education to push for an immediate promotion to detective rather than a patrol officer right off the bat. While this made Satoru something of a glory hound in the eyes of some, he didn't care - all he wanted was a stable job and enough income to make his own way in life, preferably doing something he was good at and in a way that contributed to society. At least as much as someone in law enforcement could, anyways - between the legitimate licensed heroes and the rising numbers of vigilantes it seemed like all they really did was deal with small time criminals beneath the heroes' notice or clean up after their fights.
Oh, how wrong he was.
While it was true that heroes seemed to deal with the "big" problems it didn't make the work he'd been assigned as a homicide detective any cleaner or less ugly. While Satoru felt he'd already been given something of a glimpse into how unfair and uncaring the world at large was for the people living in it those childhood experiences were nothing compared to the things he'd witnessed in that line of work. Moreover, contrary to popular belief, Satoru was not a cold or uncaring machine just doing his job, and the things he was forced to see during those five years in the police force changed him a great deal. No, more than anything it made him angry that it was all he could do to catch the murderers after the fact - but down that way was a dangerous line of thought. There were rules in place and they existed for good reason, and only once did Satoru draw his weapon in self defense on a job gone horribly wrong - and had it not been for his Quirk the resulting shootout would have been a blood bath rather than disabling shots with only minor injuries to both him and his partner.
To say that the incident left the man with lingering doubts and questions regarding the public push to use Quirks as self defense tools would have been an understatement. Severely shaken by the ordeal, Satoru would resign from his position at the department, feeling both angry and inadequate by his near inability to deal with one well trained Quirk user and several gang members, a mistake and shortcoming that had nearly gotten good people killed. While he was loath to admit it, Satoru wanted to be stronger, more effective at his job - and the only way to do that was to follow a path he'd given up on years before.
At 28 years old, however, the traditional method via academy wouldn't fly. His mind was still sharp, though, and he had friends in the Association after so many years working as a detective. While unorthodox, Satoru was able to eventually reach an agreement to undertake something akin to a work study. Already a well educated man, the only things left to him were to complete the coursework specific to most hero courses and the matching exams - and with a Quirk already well honed by years of dangerous work Satoru managed to complete the typical four years' of study within the expected time with a focus on the academics and legalities of the profession, earning his license through on the job training before he was 32.
Unlike most other heroes in the same line of work, Satoru distinguished himself on a number of different counts - typically operating in nothing but plainclothes as he did while a detective, the man made it readily apparent that he did not care about rankings or popularity. For him it was all about the work of saving lives. With a fairly strong skillset out the gate the man quickly specialized in kidnapping and murder cases, fairly similar to his time while on the force but with the training and additional experience to often handle solo. Similarly, his Quirk made him incredibly effective in rescue operations where the location of individuals was only vaguely known - and while his combat skills relied almost entirely on firearms due to the nature of his Quirk it left him a force to be reckoned with at a distance. While it was never his intention, after only two years of an almost spotless record as a hero Satoru would eventually be approached by one of the better known academies in Japan looking for teachers. Despite it not being a path initially considered before, it only took a few hours of thought to settle on his answer.

Quirk Permit
Manurhin MR 73 Revolver w/ speed loaders

QUIRK: High Noon QUIRK TYPE: Emitter QUIRK RANK: Diamond QUIRK DESCRIPTION: Fairly unique among Emitter type Quirks, while High Noon is well known among both the hero and villain communities the extremely nebulous nature of the Quirk has made it almost impossible for them to quantify with specific numbers - partly due to the fact that it has yet to be pushed to those limits in a public setting. At its core High Noon operates on two different levels, the first of which is the most immediately apparent - when provided with a projectile weapon of any sort Satoru effectively gains immediate proficiency with it, instinctively becoming aware of how and where to aim to hit a given target - and where applicable, how hard to throw. Perhaps the most flashy and well known aspect of the Quirk is that Satoru does not need a direct line of sight on his chosen target to hit it - so long as he is aware of their position the Quirk enables him to bounce or ricochet projectiles, oftentimes rendering most forms of cover useless and enabling Satoru to fight opponents normally well outside his weight class with more creative tactics.
The second and less well known aspect of the Quirk, however, is its detection ability. Just as Satoru gains an instinctual proficiency with thrown or fired weapons he also gains an instinctual awareness of individuals within a 25 meter radius of him.
Spotting: A more advanced form of detection, this technique allows Satoru to narrow his focus and "ping" an area with his Quirk, giving Satoru awareness of all individuals within ten meters of the "ping". Once performed this awareness only lasts for a single post before Satoru's Quirk is once again strictly limited by its 25 meter (82 feet) detection limit. Once Spotting has been used it requires a four post recovery period before it can be used again.
Marking: Debatably the most advanced form of his Quirk's detection ability, Satoru can "mark" individuals within his Quirk's sphere of awareness. Once marked Satoru will remain aware of them at all times for the several posts, with post count determined by distance. If they are within half a kilometer (.31 miles) a Mark will last for 10 posts, less than a full kilometer (.62 miles) 8 posts, under two kilometers (1.24 miles) 6 posts, between two and three kilometers (1.86 miles) 4 posts. Marking will not work beyond 3 kilometers (1.86 miles). Satoru's Quirk is capable of marking up to four individuals at a given time or consecutively before needing to recover, with a recovery time of 5 posts.
Hat Trick: The current pinnacle of Satoru's Quirk and a technique that pushes it as far as it will go, Hat Trick comes with both a number of benefits and downsides and is the only publicly known "finishing" move in Satoru's arsenal. The immediate upsides are fairly obvious - while the increase to his base detection range is only a modest increase to 35 meters, Satoru gains an almost savant like ability to chain ricochet rounds back to back. In practical terms this enables the man to engage multiple different targets simultaneously with each trigger pull - weapon allowing - or to hit targets that might otherwise be impossible to reach even with his base Quirk. Moreover it also cranks his overall accuracy up to eleven, even allowing him to cleanly shoot down other projectiles within this sphere of influence. This does not come without severe cost, however, nor without limitations. First and foremost, the mental focus required to use this technique will cancel any previous techniques used, erasing any Markings or Spotting "pings", and if used while those techniques are active will double their recovery time. Second, Hat Trick is essentially little more than a high intensity version of his normal Quirk pushed to its absolute limits, and as a result it has only a very short duration of two posts during which it can be used. While it will not completely "burn out" his base Quirk it will significantly weaken it as Satoru recovers, shrinking his base detection radius to a mere 5 meters (16 feet) while recovering at a rate of 5 meters (16 feet) per every 2 posts. During this recovery time no other Quirk techniques can be used.
QUIRK DRAWBACKS: Satoru's Quirk, while powerful at a glance, is limited in a number of different ways. The first and foremost being the most obvious - the greatest offensive ability of the perk is useless without a weapon. If locked in an empty room with an opponent and just his fists and feet the man's Quirk does him absolutely zero good beyond giving him awareness of an opponent he can already see, and in such a fight the only advantages Satoru has are what he has trained his body to do compared to that of an ordinary civilian with a stock human body. Similarly, in the case of thrown weapons, the damage Satoru is able to inflict and the distance it can be thrown are strictly limited to his natural strength and physique. On a lesser known note, while his Quirk gives him awareness of where a fired round will go with firearms it can only "predict" their destination beyond a single ricochet - after that one bounce where they end up is entirely down to luck and Satoru's own skill with firearms sans his Quirk. Another limitation - although one that has been kept very well hidden - is the fact that while Satoru's ability to accurately predict and track projectiles has no definable limitation to its duration and indeed seems to be passive, his ability to detect and remain aware of people within his Quirk's radius requires active use and can only be used for short bursts of time. For every five posts it remains active it requires a one post cooldown, although other techniques activated before this cooldown period strikes will remain active and not lengthen it while they are being used. Finally, the Quirk's ability to ricochet projectiles is heavily dependent on environmental factors - Satoru's ability to ricochet shots from firearms is nigh nonexistent in areas with thick sand cover or other soft/malleable surfaces.
SKILL NAME: Gunslinger (Weapon Training: Guns) SKILL RANK: Platinum SKILL DESCRIPTION: As with everything he does, Satoru was not content to merely rely on his Quirk after discovering it - he worked to master his skills as a marksman within the police force. As a result of this Satoru has become a force to be reckoned with even in situations where he has been deprived the use of his Quirk, able to wield most standard firearms with a frightening degree of proficiency. His reflexes sharpened to the point of absurdity and almost every movement from drawing to reloading done with a practiced, fluid ease of muscle memory, Satoru is just as capable of using weapons in his off hand as his primary, allowing the man to focus attention that might have otherwise been spent focused on weapon control and maintenance in combat on other details. Closing the distance for a close quarters fight seldom awards his opponents an advantage so long as the man is armed and has ammunition, the man further leveraging his police self defense and assault training to supplement his skill with a sidearm and rifle.
SKILL NAME: Enhanced Mental Resistance SKILL RANK: Gold SKILL DESCRIPTION: Satoru has seen a lot of things best left unspoken during his time in the police force and afterwards, and even prior to that it was through sheer force of discipline that he clawed his way out of poverty without a Quirk to rely on. To say that the man has an iron will would be a gross understatement.
SKILL NAME: Police Training (Enhanced Endurance) SKILL RANK: Silver SKILL DESCRIPTION: Already in fairly good physical condition even before becoming a hero, Satoru is able to move fairly quickly for a stock human for at least short bursts of speed. While not enough to directly compete with movement enhancing Quirks and support gear it's enough to run down most everyone else without specialized training. Satoru can run at max speed without getting tired for 5 posts.

QUIRK: High NoonQUIRK TYPE: Emitter QUIRK DESCRIPTION: Difficult to quantify, Aimbot works about as one might expect. When given a projectile weapon - be it a thrown item or firearm - Satoru will instinctively be aware of how and where to aim to hit a given target he has focused on, even should there be no direct line of sight. Similarly, he will remain aware of that target's location all times within a set distance once he has been made aware of them and "marked" them as a target. On a lesser note, the Quirk will detect individuals within a set but much smaller radius and automatically make Satoru aware of their presence.
